Frequently Asked Questions

How do I enable aurora alerts?

First, visit the Notification Settings on our app. Click "Enable Push Notifications" and allow browser notifications when prompted. Then add your location(s) where you want to receive alerts. You can set custom Kp thresholds for each location to receive notifications when aurora activity reaches your preferred level.

What Kp level should I set for my location?

The Kp index ranges from 0-9. For best viewing conditions, start with Kp 3-4 for northern locations and Kp 5-6 for more southern areas. Lower latitudes typically need higher Kp values to see aurora. Adjust based on your location and personal experience - some locations need Kp 4 while others require Kp 6+.

Why am I not receiving push notifications?

Check these common issues: 1) Ensure notifications are enabled in your browser settings, 2) Confirm you've added at least one location with alert settings, 3) Verify your device isn't in Do Not Disturb mode, 4) Check that the Kp threshold in your location settings matches current space weather conditions. If problems persist, try unsubscribing and resubscribing to notifications.

How accurate are the aurora forecasts?

Aurora forecasts are based on real-time Kp index data from NOAA and GFZ, along with OVATION probability models. These are typically accurate 1-3 days in advance. Accuracy decreases beyond 3 days. Cloud cover forecasts (from Open-Meteo) are most accurate 48 hours ahead. Space weather conditions can change rapidly, so always check the latest updates before heading out.

Can I contribute webcam feeds?

We're always interested in adding new webcam feeds from aurora hotspots! If you operate or know of a webcam in a prime aurora viewing location, please contact us at [email protected] with details about the feed (location, URL, stream format). We'll review and integrate quality feeds into Aurora Go.
