Lake Tekapo sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering some of the darkest skies in New Zealand. The turquoise lake, Church of the Good Shepherd, and Aoraki/Mt Cook provide stunning aurora foregrounds.
Best Time to Visit
March to September is aurora season. The Dark Sky Reserve status means excellent conditions when aurora does appear. Strong Kp (5+) typically required.
